You can edit Icons directly, using the Graphic Styles section of the Graphics Tools ribbon or the Format Graphic pane.
Treat a default black Icon as a starting point and adapt it to your presentation by editing. PowerPoint built-in Icons are available on the Insert ribbon in my version of PowerPoint, there are about 900 (!) choices in 35 categories. In most cases, use the same background shape and colors throughout a presentation to make the icons consistent and easy to identify.Use a shape to contain the icon (circles in the Acme example) – this unifies their appearance and provides opportunities for consistency, color and contrast.Use simple, consistent “flat” graphics avoid unnecessary detail. Of course, use your color scheme.Some icons may be universal (a red cross?) but make sure to consider the specific audience. Where feasible, introduce the icon with brief explanatory text to clarify the meaning.Make sure the picture is easily and correctly interpreted by your audience test your choices with colleagues and friends to make sure they interpret the icon as you intend.You can create your own icons, find icon sets on the web (some free) or use PowerPoint’s recently available built-in Icons – the subject of this post. They labeled subsequent sections of this presentation with the same icons to help the audience identify the topic. The folks over at Acme used icons in this introductory slide: In presentations, they give the audience a quickly recognizable signal or signpost for subjects, categories, etc. Icons (or “pictograms”) are simplified stylized pictures that are intended to visually represent a concept.
